Bonne Terre Information

The city and its surrounding area was once the richest source of lead ore. In 1720, it was discovered and settled in by the French who named it “La Terre Bonne” meaning “Good Earth”, referring to the vast mineral wealth found in it.

St. John Lead Co. purchased 946 acres of land in April 1864 and it is during this time that the actual town was formed. Bonne Terre was then incorporated as a third class city in 1917.
